Electric cars are the future. But electric cars are also require high-voltage, high-current batteries, and everyone knows water and electricity don't mix, right? Chevrolet wants to put your fears to rest, though, driving the new 2011 Chevrolet Volt repeatedly through a water trough to prove it's as safe as any other car.
If you were hoping to see sparks fly in the video below, you'll be sorely disappointed. But if you were hoping to own a new 2011 Volt yourself, you'll be glad to see the car pulls through the knee-deep water with flying colors--both forward and backward.
The process involves a rigorous set of repeated tests, evaluating the lithium-ion battery pack between each pass through the water. Once the trough tests are complete, the battery pack is taken back to the lab and fully disassembled to ensure there's been no water intrusion. While we'd expect nothing less from a mass-market electric vehicle, it certainly helps to see the proof on video. Watch it for yourself--it may just help you make the decision on whether you're really interested in an extended range (or other type) electric vehicle.
