GM to further improve efficiency in their full size pickups
« on: January 22, 2010, 09:27:36 AM »
Pickup trucks have always been a major component for any successful full-line automaker here in the United States, and, even though sales are down, it doesn't seem likely this will change any time soon. What will change, though, are the kinds of expectations truck buyers will have for their new rigs, and that includes improved fuel economy without a reduction in capability.

In order to meet these seemingly diametrically opposed objectives, General Motors will reportedly invest hundreds of millions of dollars into its truck platform in an effort to add a few precious miles per gallon to its fullsize Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups.

Included in the fuel-saving technology may be more than just tweaks to the engines and transmissions. For instance, Automotive News reports that The General has been working on an innovative grille that would boast electronically-operated openings that could improve aerodynamic efficiency when maximum engine cooling isn't needed. Such a system was first seen in concept form on the Cadillac Provoq crossover from the 2008 Detroit Auto Show.

Not a rumour... they're looking at at least three different technologies to boost mileage without losing HP.

Excellent! Glad to see they are improving on an already great truck!  :chevy: I mean Toyota can't even touch they're gas mileage with their V6 so why not make the gap wider and when they improve theirs GM will still be a step ahead of them.

They are going to higher ratio axles. 3.08.   You cannot get a 3.73 axle in a 1500 truck unless you order the 6.2L engine and max trailering pkg.   The standard axle for the 4x4 Z71 ext cab truck is now the 3.08.  You can add a 3.42 for no extra cost but try and find one in dealer inventory, few and far between.

What's next, 8-sp trans and 2.56 ratio?
